About the Artist

Glenn Basset was a dear friend of Mabel Alvarez and handled her art for many years. After Glenn Basset’s passing, his companion Masaaki Nakano continues to promote the work of Mabel Alvarez and is responsible for maintaining this website and estate. Glenn Basset wrote an essay about Mabel Alvarez that was published in the April, 1999, issue of American Art Review. Please enjoy that fascinating read here.

Dr. Will South was a noted art historian and director of the Weatherspoon Gallery at the University of North Carolina at Greensborough. With kind permission, a copy of Dr. Will South’s essay written for the 1999 “Mabel Alvarez, A Retrospective” presented jointly by Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, and the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, California, can be read here.
